CHARLES CADET
On December 16th 1924, a mother gave birth to her only child, a boy, who would grow up to become a local icon
among his peers in the context of the "Saint Lucian Folk Idiom" in music.
Charles Cadet remains one of the few Saint
Lucian artists - on par with the Wolcott brothers, Dunstan St. Omer and Leo (Spar) St. Helene - "who held a mirror to
the age" by mobilizing the raw rthyms he had heard as a boy, translating them from the banality of obscure primitive sounds
into rich deposits of our heritage.
One does not know for sure what caused this sudden outburst of creative persuits in this "tiny colonial backwater"
at a time when most of oue young men were beginning to challenge the imperical powers of dying Empire, struggling to seek
their exile on other shores far away from this God forsaken oasis: Disciplines such as Poetry, Drama,
